HCA profit jumps on gain from HealthOne
HCA Holdings Inc. reported net income of $2.5 billion, or $4.97 a share, for 2011, compared to net income of $1.2 billion or $2.76 a share, for 2010. Revenue for 2011 was $29.7 billion, compared to $28 billion in 2010. Results for the year ended Dec. 31 included a pretax gain of $1.5 billion, or $2.87 a share, on the acquisition of a controlling interest in an equity investment, a written statement said. In October, the company closed on the purchase of the Colorado Health Foundation’s 40 percent ownership of the HealthOne joint venture...

Via Christi tornado-proofing windows at Pittsburg hospital
Via Christi Health is having a protective coating installed on the windows in the corridors of its Pittsburg hospital. The Pittsburg Morning Sun reports the hospital's procedure during a tornado warning is to take patients to the corridors. Hanita Coatings, the Dallas-based company installing the coating, says it is strong enough to prevent projectiles from penetrating the glass, even if the glass itself shatters. The move follows a tornado in Joplin, Mo., that caused significant damage at St. John's Hospital there.

United Therapeutics to fight generic copy of lead drug
United Therapeutics Corp., (NASDAQ: UTHR) plans to fight a request from Sandoz Inc. to make a generic copy of its anti-pulmonary hypertension drug Remodulin (treprostinil). The Silver-Spring based drugmaker has announced receipt of a Paragraph IV Certification Notice Letter from Novartis’s Sandoz unit advising that Sandoz has submitted an Abbreviated New Drug Application to the Food and Drug Administration requesting approval to market a generic version of the 10 mg/mL strength of Remodulin injection...

Valley Mall evacuates after Nike shoppers get 'unruly'
The Valley Mall in Hagerstown was shut down briefly Saturday after security guards said a crowd in search of the new Nike Foam shoes at a Footlocker became unruly. Police said about 150 people were involved in the incident that forced the evacuation of the mall.Similar incidents have been reported across the country. Read more in the Baltimore Sun.
